Also I think they started the lottery to get back at other people. I would think they would be smarter than to do it for that reason because u don’t know if the person your going to get back won’t allways get picked. Some villages have stoped tbe lottery because i think that though it is morally wrong to hit someone for no reason especially with rocks. It seems actually really dumb that they started that and to me even dumber that they actually had kept it going for generations. I think the authors purpose was to make the reader see that this is morally wrong to do that to someone. Also to show the reader different things that other people did. The story is fiction but doesnt mean that it wasn’t true in other places. Questions about this story are 1. Why do they choose who “wins” the lottery the way they do..? and 2. Why do you think women are also involved in this event.? Like in the story it was tessie was the one who “won” the lottery3.Why do you think they choose the person the way they do..? blog 1-4-10 506 my opinion for this story is that, This story is pretty stupid because first, why do they have the lottery in the first place? I think it’s for the people who have commited a sin or did something bad.. second, if this one village has it, why doesn’t other villages have it? i think it’s because maybe a person got blamed for something they didn’t do. I think that maybe his family told him this story when he was a little kid, so if he did something bad they would say,” if you keep doing this you will get the lottery and I know you don’t want that.” i think this story was suspenseful because I really thought they were gonna get money or something because when the lady said,” I hope Sara doesn’t get it” I really thought they were giving out money for the lottery, but when they threw that stone I was like whoa. I want to know why did this village a lottery? or do people apply for the lottery?
In my opinion, I believe that they did the lottery for population control over the village. Maybe they felt it was necessary to get rid of some people to maintain a certain amount of people living in the village. I think some villages stopped doing the lottery because they thought it was cruel and wrong. They might have thought that the lottery isn’t a good way to get things done. I’m not sure exactly what point the author was trying to make with this story. Honestly, I didn’t get much out of it. I didn’t understand the whole point of the lottery and why they would be so cruel to one of their own people. In the story, the village people made it seem like what they were doing was just a normal thing and they were used to it. What was the meaning behind stoning that girl? Who was considered in charge of the village and why?
“THE LOTTERY” #522 I think that the ancestors started the lottery so they could reduce the population or so they could just eat the bodies for meat. Some of the villagers stopped doing the lottery because they didn’t want anyone else to get stoned and die or they already had enough food. I think that the author’s point or the moral of the story is to say “don’t be greedy” or “don’t fight anybodies wars or battles.” My two questions for The Lottery are..... Why did they even make the lottery and who even made it? After they stoned Tessie did they eat her or what did they did with the body?
#508 The ancestor's stared the lottery from people who didn’t pay there taxes because it talked about in the story how the people didn’t pay taxes and it wasn’t far to the other villagers. I think they stopped the lottery because it was abusive. Like how they hit a girl with a stone in the story. If we did that today we would get fined maybe even put in jail. I think the point the ancestor’s were trying to get a point across to the villagers about there taxes. The mood in the story to me was kind of horror because the girl get hit in the head with a stone.
I think their ancestors start the lottery because it was to decrease the population.Every year the village keeps on growing. There is three hundred people. It will eventually keep on growing. The other towns stopped because they didn’t want to get stoned. The lady was like no fair because she was getting stoned. That is why the other villages started to quit the ancient ritual. The point of the story is to not be greedy because greed can be what you didn’t expect. It can be joy or misery. Looks can fool you. Is the lottery in the story is the same as today? If not explain how it’s not the same?
#508 The ancestor's stared the lottery because the wanted to see people get hurt because they didn’t like other villagers. I think they stopped the lottery because it was abusive. I think the point the ancestor’s were trying to get a point across to the villagers about there taxes. #517 I believe that the ancestors started the lottery to keep the villagers interested in the village instead of letting them go away and move to other places in the world or other villages. I also think that it is possible for them to have created for when someone dies and doesn’t say gets their stuff, they decide who gets it. I think that some of the other villages have stopped doing the lottery because the expenses of giving things away is just too high. If you think of it giving things off every once in a while can cost a whole ton of money in the long run. In the story there was a man who said they stopped because there is nothing good enough for them but I think that he was wrong. I am not one hundred percent sure what point the author was trying to make. The story was kind of hard to fallow along with. If I had to guess what the author meant I think she would mean that life is not always fair to everyone. Life can be unfair but you have to deal with it and get passed it. Unlike the woman who kept screaming that it isn’t fair to her and her husband. I imagine that the lottery might have been rigged so that one family could get the prizes. When the kids started throwing the rocks they could have been paid to do that. I predict that the woman who got stoned will not win the lottery and that the woman screaming in the crowd will be very angered.
#503 “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. I think the Lottery is going to be money. My reaction at the end of the story was I was shocked. I was shocked because the girl got stoned at the end of the story and that was the Lottery. I think this village started the Lottery because all the other villages did it. I think that the villages stopped because it was really mean. This books genre is horror because they stoned the girl. I have 2 questions, the first one is What is the point of the book? and Why did they start stoning the people?
Dear #509 I disagree with you on how it was necessary to control the population. I think that if they didn't have enough room then they should have built more and more houses for everyone that needs one. Sincerely #522
522 I think the village folks made the lottery for fun but I think they realized it was not right.I think that tessie's body was used as a scarecrow or put in the graveyard.
#515 I believe that the ancestors created the lottery because they were bored and had nothing better to do, so they made up a lottery where they stoned people to death. I also think that the people that made this up maybe had problems in their head because who would start something like that? Next, I believe that the lottery has died in other villages because they thought it was wrong, or immoral, or wrong. I believe this because they said other villages stopped the lottery and because it is immoral. Finally I think the point the author is trying to put out is that sometimes it’s better to miss something. If Tessie would have stayed home and finished cleaning up she wouldn’t have died. two questions Why do you think people would do something like this to their friends or family? Do you think this is something to do with religion?
518 The Lottery was started by ancestor, they crated this game because they whore full of evil I guess. I think that the ancestor also created the lottery to check their luck. The lottery winner got stoned by the whole village. In my opinion this story sucked. The ending was bad, why would you even enter in the game? Why if you win you lose your life. When I think of the lottery I think of the mega millions or power ball and if you win you do not get stoned, you get million of dollars. There whore a lot of villagers that died out of the game. I think they that was a risk that you wouldn't gain anything but lose your life. The point of the story is that don't risk something more valuable then then what your going to gain. The end.
514 The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is about a small village that does a lottery. Harmless, right? WRONG! Whoever wins the “lottery” has to be stoned! You are probably wondering, “Why would their ancestors start that kind of preposterous thing?” Well, I think it is because they were bitter and angry at their people and started this lottery, but I really don’t know. I bet that the other villages they talked about in the story stopped the lottery because hmmm... IT KIND OF HURT!! I mean, why else would they get rid of it? I really don’t know what the author’s point was in this but, maybe not all lotteries are worth while? Some questions I have are: Why would some village keep the lottery? Explain. Why did the children get in line first? Well, overall this story is not very concise to me. It makes no sense in my mind. No wonder the people that first read it got angry.
#522 to #508 I agree with you, I think they should be put in jail, get a fine, or at least have a trial. Stoning just sounds like a terrible way to die.
Dear 509 I agree with the comment you posted to 522 i mean it would also help the village to get more people because it would have more workers and stuff etc.
I think the ancestors started the lottery for three specific reasons. First, is that the ancestors maybe thought that they needed to explain there thoughts with other people, by doing the lottery. Secondly, is that the ancestors also maybe did it for the fun of it, just to try and have some laughs with other people. Lastly, just to tease people with making a thing about stoning a girl at the end. I think the villages stopped the lottery for three specific reasons. First, is that the villages maybe of thought it was so ridiculous to even think of it. Secondly, they also might of thought that it was so cruel to even to such do a terrible thing like that. Lastly, i was just wondering maybe if the villages were just doing that to protect all of the people, from badness. I think the point that the author was making are three specific reasons, First, is that the one point of it all is to have many differences about this story. Secondly, maybe another point that the author is saying might be they just wanted to make the reader confused. Lastly, the author might of wanted the reader to have a clue, of how horrible that this story convinces people to think of 1) Why did the lottery start ? 2) Describe why Mr. summers is in charge of the village ?
506-512 i disagree with you because if they used tessie's body for a scarecrow, won't it decay or smell so bad? who says they have graveyards? u don't know..
Dear #522, Maybe it wasn’t about whether or not they had enough room for everyone. Maybe they just wanted to make sure they could control the number of people living there. It might have not had anything to do with space.
#509, I agree with you, maybe they didn't have any other way to control the population so they might have just killed people. This definitely wasn't the best way to control it but I guess it worked for them. -#515
I think the ancestors started the tradition because they liked being a small town and they feel that they need to eliminate people so they stay a small town. I think this because there is no other explanation for why they would just start stoning people. Other villages stopped doing the lottery because they felt it was not right killing people. I think that giving up the lottery would be a better decision then keeping it. The point the author is trying to make is that when someone tries to go out of the ordinary and change something they are not listened to and put down by others. The author represented this by showing how the one woman that spoke up and said that it was wrong was the one that was chosen to be stoned. The mood of the story is anticipating and kind of a mystery. You don’t really know where the story is leading to which makes u think its a mystery. The theme of the story is horror. Its a horror because it involves the death of someone. What made the towns people decide that stoning people was the right way to do things in there town? Why do you think the oldest man there is still there and has not been chosen.
514, I agree with your moral. Everyone gets all excited for a lottery, but not all lottery's are worth it. Why get all excited to watch someone be killed, next time it might be you. -515
525- I think the ancestors started this just to have something traditional to do.My opinion is based off of the way the villagers acted.I think they must have not been able to come up with anything better to do.My opinion on why the villagers stopped doing the lottery is that they stopped because more and more people started to disagree with it.I find it pointless because there is really no point of hurting someone who just happened to draw a piece of paper with something on it.I think they probably found something better to do eventually.I think the authors point was to show how society has changed so much, and that generations opinions may change about certain traditions and other things. This is my opinion because there is a huge difference between then and now.I think the author was just trying to show everyone how different people feel about different things. Two questions I have about this are Who in the world came up with the lottery? and How did it make all the villagers feel?
501 - “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. I think that the ancestors started the lottery so they can have tradition for a really long time and they could have also started it so they can be remembered in the future. Some villages may have stopped because it was not that important to them as it was the others. I think the point the author was trying to is that make a family tradition and it may last a long time after.
#511 The ancestors started the lottery because they wanted some excitement in there little village. Most villages stopped doing the lottery because they were born with a brain. Second, there is no point in it because you could be killing some one close to you. Lastly, you want your village to grow why take people out. The author was saying to not ask for a re do or you will get stoned. Who started the lottery and Why? Why was Mr. Summers in charge of the lottery?
“The Lottery” was a phenomenal short story. A few questions may come to mind that weren’t answered in the story that forces you to create an opinion of your own. For example why did the lottery start? The ancestors were the first ones to start the lottery. I believe they did it for a ritual that had been passed down to them. Maybe the villagers don’t know why they do, but they do it because they were told to when they were young. One of the villagers also mentioned that some of the other villages had stop doing the lottery. Another villager said that it was because of their “young wind.” Maybe they were never taught the ways of the lottery, or maybe they decided to be independent, and thought the only way to show their independence was to provoke mutiny. This author hadn’t this story because she thought it would be funny to throw stones at people. There is a moral value behind this story. I believe the point she is trying to make is that life is a game of chance, and sometimes you may win sometimes you may lose. There is no definiate way of knowing. 516
#504 I don't really know why the people created the lottery, I guess that they didn't have anything to do. It is horrible that they would ever want to throw rocks at people but to each is own i guess. I thinkt that the lottery has died out in other villages because people just can't stand it anymore. They are done killing eachother and have had enough. The point that the author was trying to make is not to throw rocks at eachother, I don't feally know what the point of the story was. This story was really weird.
# 513 The lottery by Shirley Jackson is about a small village that does a lottery. Who ever wins the "lottery" has to be stoned! Why would the ancestors start this kind of thing? I think it is because they were bitter and angry at their people and started this lottery, I'm not really sure. I bet that the other villages they talked about in this story stopped the lottery because it was mean and very painful, why else would they get rid of the lottery? I'm not sure what the authors point was, but maybe her point was not all lotteries are worth while.
I think that the ancestors started the the lottery, because they wanted to make people happy. In the story it says that it make people happy when won a prize. I think that the other villagers stopped because it might of gotten to crazy. In the story it was a little crazy. I think that the point was that life is not fair. The girl was saying that it wasn’t fair.
#507 I think they stopped having lottery's because some people didn't do there tax's. That's why I think they they do lottery's. They stopped having lottery’s because they were abusing other people. That's why they don't have lottery's anymore. I don't know the point that the author is making. I have two questions about the book, What is the point of the book? Also why did they start stoning people?

I think the ancestors started this just to have something traditional to do.My opinion is based off of the way the villagers acted.I think they must have not been able to come up with anything better to do.My opinion on why the villagers stopped doing the lottery is that they stopped because more and more people started to disagree with it.I find it pointless because there is really no point of hurting someone who just happened to draw a piece of paper with something on it.I think they probably found something better to do eventually.I think the authors point was to show how society has changed so much, and that generations opinions may change about certain traditions and other things. This is my opinion because there is a huge difference between then and now.I think the author was just trying to show everyone how different people feel about different things. Two questions I have about this are Who in the world came up with the lottery? and How did it make all the villagers feel?

You do have a point that i don't know if they had graveyards but where are the villagers going to put the body.

I agree about why you think here is a lottery. I also agree with your questions.

BURN IT!!!!!!!

I don't really know why the people created the lottery, I guess that they didn't have anything to do.

The lottery by Shirley Jackson is about a small village that does a lottery.
#501 to #520
i don't think that they did the lottery because they needed to explain something.
501 to 513
i think that is a great reason to start a lottery because the ancestors might have not been good people.

I think they stopped having lottery's because some people didn't do there tax's. That's why I think they they do lottery's.
They stopped having lottery’s because they were abusing other people. That's why they don't have lottery's anymore.
I don't know the point that the author is making. I have two questions about the book, What is the point of the book? Also why did they start stoning people?
