"On the Sidewalk Bleeding" by Evan Hunter

Think about the following quotes from the story and what they mean:
1. "Had they known that he was Andy or had they simply known that he was a Royal wearing a purple silk jacket? Had they stabbed him, Andy, or had they stabbed the jacket and the title and what good was the title if you were dying?"

2. "Even in his pain, there had been some sort of pride in knowing he was a Royal."

3. "The world didn't know he was Andy. The world didn't know he was alive."

4. "The jacket only had one meaning now, and that was a very simple meaning."

Examine these quotes, and look at the writing you've already done both before and after reading this story. Answer the following prompt:

Explain the thought process Andy goes through about his life and the decisions he has made. What does Andy decide about his life by the end of the story? What did you learn from Andy's experience? Can you relate Andy's experience to your life? How?

"Without music life would be a mistake" Nietzsche

In The Giver, Jonas' community follows the idea of "Sameness." There is no weather, hills, animals, color, or major differences. We also learn on pg 157 that the community has also done away with music.

We spent a lot of time writing about music. Look at the questions you answered yesterday, and the pictures you drew, and answer the following questions.

1. How important is music in your life?
2. Could you imagine a world without music?
3. Who are some of your favorite singers and songs? Why are they your favorite?

4. Pick one of the 4 songs we listened to first- What story was being told? How did the song make you feel? Why? Why do you think I picked that song?
5. Which one of the songs did you like most? Why?
6. Do you have any other final comments about music or this activity?

Your job is to write at least 2 well constructed paragraphs answering all of these questions. You must also respond to at least 4 other students. If a student responds to you , I expect you to respond back.

Be respectful and thoughtful!

Think about the 3 questions that were asked of you at the assembly on Monday morning:

1. Who am I?

5th Period- Children's March

Pick 2-3 of the options below to respond to in paragraph form:
  • Why couldn't the parents/adults protest? What would happen to them if they did protest?
  • Dr. King said the only way to change what was happening in Birmingham was to fill the jails. Why was this important and effective?
  • One person stated, "a lot of people thought the kids were going to get hurt, but the reality was that we were born black in Alabama and we were going to get hurt if we didn't do something." What did she mean by this?
  • When the kids were arrested, Dr. King told the parents, " Don't worry about your children. They are going to be all right. Don't hold them back if they want to go to jail for they are doing a job for all of America and for all mankind." What job is talking about?
  • What was your reaction of the movie? What did it make you think about? Did you learn something new about that time in history?
