The story of The Lottery seems nice at first but ends harsh... The ancestors may have started The Lottery to punish the late. Such as the mother she had shown up late. Therefore she was pelted with rocks. Some villages may have stopped The Lottery so then they can have more people living in their village or they didn’t like watching people getting stoned. If they stopped killing people then the population would grow larger and larger. Or from the screams of the person dieing caught up to the person in charge and they removed it. Possibly the author was trying to tell us that not all things that seem good are good. In The Lottery I would think some one would win a prize. Turns out you may get killed by getting stoned with rocks. :( So sad

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.
The ancestors started the lottery because it was a was a way to maintain the population.
Some villages stoped doing the lottery because they also think it was a terrible thing to do.
The author was trying to make the point that people should quit the lottery.
Why was it called the lottery?
Explain why the 77 year old man liked the lottery?
I think the 77 year old man likes the lottery because he has been around it for so long and he does not see anything wrong with it. To him its tradition, an when you are raised on something it hard to change when your older because that is what you have grown up doing.

My questions:
From all the ways of dieing why do u think they picked getting stoned?
why do you think the wife got beat in with the stones, what did she do to deserve it?

Why I think the ancestors started the lottery is because it could have been a religious belief. They could have thought that a God or many Gods could have been giving them signs to play the lottery. I also think that some villages stopped the lottery is because they might not have understood the story behind the lottery. Some people were probably tired of losing friends and family. They also might have thought it was a repulsive game. The point that the author was trying to make could probably be that as the years go by people change with them; and some people don’t like change so they don’t move with the active years. Another point that she could have been making is that people have different out looks on a subject. -717

Dear 710,
I agree with you because once when you grow up it gets really hard for you to change your ways unless you are the old man from the Christmas Carol and have 3 ghost come visit you in the night. Why would someone not what to get pelted with rocks to their death...sarcasm... I also agree cause when one person that is in charge and is old and lived with the lottery for so long it would be hard to quite.

Dear 717,
Why would the gods have their helpers down on earth start by playing the Lottery? Nice using words that describe more though, it helps to understand the meaning of The Lottery.

Dear blogger 703,

If they started the lottery to punish the late then why didn’t they punish the (Headmaster?) or the person who calls the people for the lottery? Also how would the person who was late pulled out the card with the black dot why why wasn’t it someone else?

I believe the ancestors started the lottery because they wanted to keep their population down. The reason their population goes down is because no one wants to go to that town so they don’t get stoned. So far it has worked they have kept their population down to about 300 people. Even villages want to keep their population down but they have stopped their tradition of stoning people because some people didn’t like the tradition like the women from the town in the story, Tessy. The author wrote this story because she thought out population is to big and we need to stone some people so our population goes down. Could one or more people get stoned at a time? What would happen if the person who is pulling out the tickets gets stoned? Would they just pick a new person to do the ticket box?

721- The Lottery is a story that has a surprise ending.I think the ancestors started the lottery to see if it would catch on.Also to see how many people would join in. Villages stopped doing the lottery. The reason i think they had stopped is because they didn't want to hurt people and get stoned any more. The point the author was trying to make was that everybody has a different point of view or opinion on everything. The author made it clear that that was her point. She did that by showing even if you are all the same, Live in the same town and do the same things you still have your own opinion. All of the women did the same things. They all had the same style, A faded house dress and a sweater. People can all look the same act the same but everyone has their own ideas and opinions.

What gave the villagers the idea to throw stones at people?

What were Tessie’s feelings and thoughts when the stone was flying through the air at her head?

Anonymous said...

714- I think they started the lottery because they were having to many criminals and they needed to teach them that if you go against the law they still will get punished one way or another. The town would stone the criminals. Some of the villages stopped the lottery because so many people were dieing and they were loosing to many villagers. The point the author was trying to make was if you go against the law your going to get punished.

Dear 703,

I disagree with why you think the lottery started, i think that it doesn't matter who was late or not, it was a chance that everyone was taking and anyone could have been chosen. -717

In the story The Lottery it was in a town that had a lottery. I think that they had a lottery, because in that town they had little supply of food and crop supply. Then later when a couple kids where born then they took the drawing to see who would “win” the lottery. In my opinion this is a very cruel thing to do, for whatever reason they were doing it for. Which makes me believe that the other villages started to realize that the lottery was very unfair. Even though some people didn’t think so in the short story. I also believe that some of the villages stopped doing it, because most of the citizens in the town started “winning” the lottery more often, so then the villages population started going down quicker and quicker. The point the other was trying to make from his story i think was that she was trying to show people that everybody has different kinds of traditions.Even if they are insane traditions that get harmless villagers stoned to death.

What was the whole point in doing to lottery, if the winner didn’t win anything?

Why at the end did they let a child boy , and a 12 year old girl pick out of the box?I think that was very weird, because everyone was so casual about the fact that they were putting a women’s life in children’s hands.

The ancestors started the lottery was because they thought it would be funny. When the people threw the rock they would just laugh about. Well when it happened to them they didn’t think it was so funny then, but when they saw someone else in pain they never knew what they were going though. Some villages stopped doing the lottery because it was not fair cause one guy never got stoned. One guy went every year with out getting stoned but everyone else got it.The point the author was trying to make was they were trying to tell people how it was back in the day and how it has change today. Also maybe they stopped it because people were complaning because there kids were coming home to there parents crying. Also parents did not think it was a good idea. How did that one man go without getting stoned ? What is the real reason they stopped the lottery?

The Lottery by: Shirley Jackson
This story has a boring calm vibe in the beginning, but end in a tragic hair raising end. I’m thinking that the ancestors started this “lottery” to get rid of or punish the younger families. It could also because they want to keep their town as small as possible. I feel like some of the villagers stopped doing the lottery because they couldn’t handle watching the little ones get stoned to death. Tessie in the story was the only one who stood up for the people that got picked to get stoned. She wanted it to stop all together. The point the author maybe trying to get to the reader is even if something sounds good or the outcome is good.. It's not always good.

I believe you are correct that they did the lottery to maintain the population from getting to big so not so many people wanted to come to their town.

Dear 703,
I disagree with you saying they started the lottery to punish the late. That is like me being late to class and Ms.Bruno throwing rocks at my head.

Dear 703,
I think that is so true that somethings don't turn out the way you would think they would. Just because it's called the lottery most people would think that everyone would be winning something, but it turns out just the opposite. I think that your opinion on the short story was very clever to the way that the story was. You only wrote things that would make sense to the whole story, and i enjoyed it.

Dear 716,
I began to read 716 when I relized but you need to remember that back then they had gods. The gods have unlimitmited power from books that I have read. Plus from punishing the head master it is possible that harm would come from the head mater plus then he would could possible oick out a card that dosen't have one. Have you noticed that in the readings, you would think that you would be able to see the black dot?

“The lottery” By Shirley Jackson is about the group of villagers that are keeping the tradition going. The tradition is that if they win the grand prize they get stoned to death. In the story they say that “ A stone hit her on the head”.They started this many years ago by their ancestors “The first people that had first landed there”. I think they started it because they thought that the person that wins each year is that its their destiny for them to win the prize. Some villagers stopped doing the lottery because they had allot of stuff to do around town or they just don’t wanna be in it because of their family needs him and his help. the point tat the author was trying to make on the story is that you have to think about your choices before you make them or else they will die. My questions are what is the real reason that the author wrote this shorty story? My second question is Wy is it the only guys get to join in, why not the woman's join?

Dear 709,
I also agree that this is a cruel thing to do. It's like tricking the person into dieing. They also know that they are going to get pelted with stones if they win. -712

721- I think the point of the lottery even if you didn't win anything it was a tradition and people were just doing what they know. To 709 from 721..

The ancestors started the lottery to lower their population. The population would need to be lowered to avoid overpopulation. The lottery was going on in many other towns. A few of the other towns stopped doing the lottery. I’m guessing they stopped because they thought it was brutal and unnecessary. They probably figured it was wrong to kill each other for no reason. This story has an odd plot, indeed, but there is a point. The point, in my eyes would be; even when you win, you don’t always get the best reward.

Questions
1) What is the reason behind not replacing the box?
2) Why did Mrs. Dunbar order her son to go tell his injured father about the lottery, other than the fact that he was not there to see it himself?

I think that the ancestors started the lottery because they may have been real insane and barbaric and chose certain people to be killed, so the villagers had something to amuse them. Or they wanted to get rid of people so there village would be smaller, because ms summers sad that over 300 people lived in the town. People in other villages might of thought that stoning people to death was cruel. they also may have thought that it was not a good way of getting rid of people in the village. i think that the moral of the story is that we need to change our ways. we need to change are was because we are hurting one another. just like how we have evolved from being people who sacrificed each other. that is what i think she meant for the moral to be.

I think the ancestors started the lottery because it was something to do. It says the whole lottery took less than two hours, which makes me believe that the people did it often. I also think they did it for punishment because when it says ‘’selecting the smoothest and roundest stones” makes me think that no one cared for each other. Some villages stopped doing the lottery because it was not civil. I say this because the story says that the population of the village was 300 people. The author trying to say that the lottery was cruel and unfair. The author described the stoning to be very gruesome and yucky. Tessie Hutchinson was very angry because sh thought it was unfair. My questions are... What were the recommendations to be in the lottery? Another one is could more than one person get stoned at a time?

Anonymous said...

Dear 718,
your question about the old man that did the lottery every single year, and never won it in the whole 77 years that he has don it. I think was a very good question, because i had the same one in my head. Although he was upset that the other villages stopped doing to lottery he was stoked about the one they were doing, and i think he was because he rigged the box.I think he rigged to box every single year, and i don't like that about him.

710 I disagree with you if they wanted to maintain the population why would they stone their own people? Then people would know they did that and wouldn't want to live there that is true. But if no one moved there they would end up stoning all of their people and no one would be left.

Why did he ancestors start the lottery? I think that the ancestors started the lottery just to maintain the population. I think that because in the story, they talk about how there’s only about 300 people in the whole village. So i think that for the population of the villagers it was a good thing.
Why have some villagers stopped doing the lottery? Some of the villagers have stopped doing the lottery because the people get stoned. Also I think some of the people just believe the things differently because there was an old man that had been playing the lottery for like 77 years and has never been picked.

What point was the author trying to make? I think the point the Author was trying to make is more less saying that you will get stoned for doing bad things.. I think like when the people were getting stoned it was a very wrong decision to put them through all that pain and some what suffering.

Questions: What exactly would they do when they would stone people? Kill them or just put them through the pain?

Was it just luck or was it rigged that the old guy played the lottery for like 77 years and never got picked?

I think the ancestors began The Lottery because they thought it would be a good idea to sacrifice people. Maybe they did it because of religion or because they were just bad people. It probably has died in other villages because the villagers did not want to keep hurting peoples families. Or every person in a village has had someone killed by this and did not want it to happen again. I think the author’s point of this story was to make a picture in the readers mind to show them what people are capable of doing.

Anonymous said...

Dear 715
Why do you think that selecting the smoothest stones was punishment right away. If I were to punish someone with stones I would not do it with nice or smooth stones. If you think that the other villages stopped doing the Lottery than why do you think they started it in the first place? To not be civil? How does the author saying that the population make you think that the Lottery was cruel and unfair.

706 I think that the ancestors made the lottery because it was like a type of punishment for them. For some reason they might of thought that throwing rocks at people was cool. I don’t think they do it in other villages because they have faced the fact that that’s just being cruel and harsh. I think that the author is trying to make a point. I think that he’s trying to make us see how peoples culture was back then.

The reason that the ancestors started the lottery is to slow down population in a way people could get a game from. Most villages stoped this because they wanted to stop death and increase population. The point the author was trying to show is how everything has changed from a harsh time to a time of fredom and life to everyone. I think this story was trying to influence everyone to keep it far and have nothing like this come back. We all should get freedom and the right to be free and have lottery’s that are a prize.

When I first read “The Lottery” I thought it was going to be about someone winning a lottery ticket. Then throughout the story I realized its nothing about a lottery ticket. That story was so messed up. I don’t get how someone can just stone someone to death. I think people stopped doing The Lottery because people were losing population quickly in their village. The point the author is trying to make in the story is to show how they played games and how they dealt with things back in the old days.

Questions:
-Did The Lottery actually exist in the past?
-How do you enter The Lottery? And how does it work?

The ancestors began the lottery as a way of punishment. To people who broke the law and for fun. The lottery must have died out because it might have been forgotten, or they thought it was too cruel. The point of the story is if they stop killing people there wouldn't be so much violence in the world.
